ICELAND – Land of the midnight sun

Iceland is a large island close to the Arctic Circle covering an area of approx. 39,000sq miles. The landscape is wild & rugged, with black lava, red sulphur, rivers, waterfalls & green valleys. The whole of the central highland plateau of the island is barren & was used for moon landing training by the Americans. Not forgetting, the geyser’s that it is famous for.

A wide variety of birds were seen including Black-tailed Godwit, Golden Plover & Red-necked Phalarope, all in breeding plumage. Snow-white Ptarmigan, Barrow’s Goldeneye & Harlequin Duck. The outfall of the fish factory at Husavik, is an excellent place to learn the difference between Iceland & Glaucous gulls. On a boat trip from Husavik, Humpback Whales entertained us.
