THE ORKNEY ISLANDS

I spent a month visiting some of the islands, providing there was a vehicle ferry which would take my motorhome, from the middle of May to the middle of June in 2016. The weather on the ferry to the island was a little overcast and foggy but improved rapidly, to brilliant sunshine, by the time I disembarked. It is an excellent wilderness if you want to spend time observing the wildlife, as well as some spectacular scenery & wonderful sandy beaches.

Short-eared Owls can be seen, even at 10am. Arctic & Great Skuas breed here & the cliffs are full of Kittiwakes, Guillemots, Razorbills & Ravens. Puffins can be found hang gliding on the updrafts. Purple Sandpipers & Black Guillemots along the shoreline.

Photo opportunities also occur for sunrises & sunsets, not forgetting the Old Man of Hoy.
