Romania 2012 Birdwatching Trip

ROMANIA - A bird watching trip in August 2012

This was my first visit to Romania & the Danube Delta. At Bucharest airport we were met by our local guide & driver before heading off to Calarasi on the north side of the Danube. Here we crossed the border into Bulgaria for our overnight hotel stop. After breakfast it was time to re-cross the river before heading to the Black Sea coast area near Constanta. After two days here we drove to Murighiol to board our Ponton (floating hotel) & slowly cruise down the Gheorghe channel to the village of Stantu Gheorghe.

Each day we used small boats to access areas before stopping overnight, then moving on & exploring other areas. Eventually we reached the Black Sea before returning to Murighiol, again with birdwatching & overnight stops on the way. 176 species were seen, including Little Bittern, Osprey, Hobby, Pelicans, Flycatchers, various terns & both Lesser Spotted & Black Woodpeckers.
