SVARLBARD - Life on the edge of the Arctic

Svarlbard, more commonly known as Spitsbergen, is part of Norway. It is Europe’s northernmost territory situated on the edge of the Arctic Circle, approx. 800 miles from the North Pole.

In July 2013 I flew to Longyearbyen, Svarlbard’s airport, to join a trip aboard the ice strengthened ship ‘Akademik Sergey Vavilov’. The ship headed north calling in at various fjord’s for Zodiac excursions before heading into the Arctic ice until we were approx. 540 miles from the North Pole. Returning from here we entered the Hinlopen Strait, again visiting various fjord’s before starting the return journey to Longyearbyen.

The glaciers, icebergs, birds, mammals & plants made this a memorable & unforgettable trip.
